Standard Formula for Child Support
Child support is determined in Arizona through a standardized formula that takes into account several factors, including:
- Incomes and expenses based on both parents' gross income
- Adjustments for other biological children living in the household
- Health care insurance cost adjustments
- Extracurricular activities and day care costs adjustments
- Special needs for both gifted and children with disabilities

Addressing Questions and Concerns
Questions we address for our clients include:
- How can I afford to pay child support and all my expenses?
- How far back in time can I go to get child support?
- How do I obtain a court-ordered DNA test to establish paternity of the father of my child to pay child support?
- As the custodial parent, how will I be able to survive on that meager child support?
- I lost my job. Can you help me modify my support immediately?
Child Support Enforcement and Modification
If a parent refuses to follow the child custody and visitation arrangement or does not keep up with support obligations, the court can order parents to uphold their agreements.
Modifications involve changing the divorce decree, child custody agreement or support agreement. There must be a significant change in circumstances for a parent or the child for a modification to be ordered.
Modifications of custody can be obtained if the custodial parent is unfit due to mental illness, drug use or other serious problems. They may also be sought if a custodial parent wants to move more than 100 miles from the child's other biological parent. Relocations with children cannot take place without the consent of the other parent or by order of the court.
